Australian steelmakers BlueScope will lead an international consortium interested in acquiring the Whyalla steelworks.

The consortium includes Japanese, Indian and Korean steelmakers, who make up three of the top 15 companies in the world by annual steel production.

BlueScope has revealed that these companies included Japan’s Nippon Steel, India’s JSW Steel, and South Korea’s POSCO.

Whyalla has been identified by the consortium as a prospective location for future production of lower emissions iron, with potential to play an essential role in the decarbonisation of the global steelmaking industry.

The South Australian government said the consortium’s interest was “really encouraging” but reiterated that a sale was not expected until the second half of 2026.
